The following disaster courses are designed for American Red Cross volunteers and paid staff who will respond when fires, floods, tornadoes, hurricanes or other natural or man-made disasters occur locally or in communities nationwide.  

 

These courses will train participants to carry out the Red Cross mission of helping people to prevent, prepare for and cope with disaster-related emergencies.  All of these course are provided at no charge.

Introduction to Disaster Services (Click Here)

This online-based course provides fundamental information about disasters, community response and the role of Red Cross Disaster Services.  (Prerequisite for ALL disaster classes)

 

Damage Assessment (3 hours)

Prepares participants to serve as Red Cross Damage Assessment workers who will obtain and report information on the extent of damage to buildings and property following a disaster and provide operational support on disaster relief operations. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Community Disaster Education (CDE) Presenter's Workshop (8 hours)

Prepares participants to deliver quality CDE presentations by providing background information and support. Workshop shares ways to overcome disaster denial issues and motivate individuals and families to take disaster preparedness steps.  Focus is on choosing appropriate messages and materials for target audiences. Course does not teach basic presentation skills. (Prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services; experience in public speaking and commitment to deliver quality CDE)

 

Disaster Health Services (DHS): Overview (4 hours)

Provides basic information on the activities of the Red Cross DHS function.  Participants will learn what knowledge, skills and abilities are needed by DHS staff, and how they can volunteer in their local chapter. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Disaster Health Services (DHS): Simulation (8 hours)

Through use of scenarios and case studies, course participants experience the types of challenges they may encounter on a typical disaster relief operation in shelter and casework centers. Course provides opportunities to practice the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to work in the DHS function and complete the basic preparation needed to work in DHS on local and national relief operations. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services; Disaster Health Services: Overview; license/certification as RN, LPN/LVN, EMT, MD, PA or student nurse.)

 

Disaster Mental Health Services (DMHS): Overview (3 hours)

Helps participants understand the Red Cross DMHS function.  Participants will learn how DMHS supports disaster relief workers and people affected by disasters. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Disaster Welfare Information (DWI): Connecting Your Community (3 hours)

Prepares participants to handle family well-being inquiries in their local chapter. Participants will learn how to provide effective service, transmit an inquiry to the DWI function on a disaster relief operation and conduct follow-up to ensure that the inquirer's needs are met. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Disaster Welfare Information (DWI): Simulation (4 hours)

Prepares participants to work as team members in the Red Cross DMI function on a disaster relief operation. (Prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services; Disaster Welfare Information: Connecting Your Community)

 

Emergency Operations Center Workshop (8 hours)

Prepares participants to serve as Red Cross liaisons at a government Emergency Operations Center to support the flow of information and the coordination of Red Cross services. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV): Ready, Set, Roll (8 hours)

Prepares participants to safely and effectively use a Red Cross ERV and its equipment to meet feeding and other service needs of people affected by disaster. (Prerequisites: Introduction to Disaster Services; Mass Care: Overview; First Aid/CPR certification; valid driver's license; satisfactory Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) report and Defensive Driving course certification; completion of a 3 hour Red Cross self-study course on ERV use.)

 

Family Services: Providing Emergency Assistance (8 hours)

Introduces participants to the Red Cross Family Services function and the skills and tools needed to conduct an effective interview with a disaster client. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Mass Casualty Disaster (8 hours)

Prepares participants to provide an effective initial Red Cross response to a mass casualty disaster. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services; Participants must have responded to a large disaster, either within their community or preferable on a national Disaster Services Human Resources (DSHR) assignment)

 

Human Resources in Disaster (4 hours)

Provides basic information about the activities and processes of the Red Cross Local Disaster Volunteers (LDV), Staffing and Training Functions. Participants will learn how to deliver/support sufficient and efficient human resources on a disaster relief operation. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Liaison I: Conducting a Community Collaboration (8 hours)

Prepares participants to build and maintain collaborative relationships to enhance the community's ability to respond to disaster. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Logistics: Overview (3 hours)

Teaches participants how to procure and distribute supplies and materials required for a disaster relief operation. Includes training in warehouse operations, management of vehicles and facility maintenance. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Logistics: Simulation (4 hours)

Gives participants simulation training for carrying out the Logistics function in the event of a local disaster or as part of a national disaster relief operation. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services; Logistics: Overview)

 

Serving the Diverse Community (7 hours)

Prepare participants to meet the needs of changing populations in the communities the Red Cross serves. Covers customer service for populations in the community; how prejudices and stereotypes develop and affect service; what Red Cross expects of its paid and volunteer staff and how expected behaviors apply in actual situations. Course does not include information on EEO goals and federal regulations, or recruiting paid and volunteer staff from diverse populations. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Mass Care: Overview (3 hours)

Provides basic information on the activities of the Mass Care function on a disaster operation. Participants will learn how to plan for and meet the immediate food and nutritional needs of affected individuals and families. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Public Affairs I (8 hours)

Prepares participants to work in the Red Cross Public Affairs function on local, state or national disaster relief operations. Participants should have experience in the public affairs field. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services; public relations experience/skills)

 

Shelter Operation (3 hours)

Prepares participants to effectively and sensitively manage Red Cross shelter operations as a team to meet the needs of people displaced by disaster. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services; Mass Care: Overview)

 

Shelter Simulation (4 hours)

Gives participants an opportunity to practice the knowledge and skills needed to run a successful shelter operation. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services; Mass Care: Overview; Shelter Operations)

 

Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism (WMD/T): Overview (4 hours)

Provides basic information on the issues and safety concerns of performing Red Cross function in an environment involving Weapons of Mass Destruction/Terrorism incidents.  Participants will learn about the skills, abilities and knowledge needed by disaster workers in this environment. (Prerequisite: Introduction to Disaster Services)

 

Orientation to International Services (4 hours)

Overview of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, and the reasons for American Red Cross involvement internationally. Highlights Geneva Conventions and Red Cross Fundamental Principles. (Prerequisite for ALL International Services courses)

 

International Humanitarian Law (4 hours)

Explains the role of the Red Cross as guardian of the Geneva Conventions, and the protections provided for victims of armed conflict. (Prerequisite: Orientation to International Services)

 

International Relief and Development (4 hours)

Participants will learn about the role of Red Cross programs and services in natural disasters and complex emergencies; international delegates; the use of in-kind donations and other factors in providing assistance globally. (Prerequisite: Orientation to International Services)
