Q: How is the American Red Cross funded?

A: Approximately one-half of our budget is funded by the United Ways of Davie, Forsyth, Stokes and Yadkin counties.  The American Red Cross depends on the voluntary charitable contributions of the American people. In addition to seeking individual donations, the Red Cross solicits funds from corporations and foundations. The Red Cross also receives reimbursements and grants on occasion from local, state and federal government agencies for specific projects.

Q: What does the American Red Cross do in my community?

A: The American Red Cross does not accept small items such as clothing, shoes, and bedding. Donations of such items need to be sorted, cleaned and warehoused, which impedes the process of providing relief to disaster victims. Bulk items, such as pallets of shampoo or 100 cases of toothpaste, are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. If you are interested in donating bulk items, please e-mail us.

Q: How do I make a gift to support international programs and relief through the American Red Cross?

A: The American Red Cross, as a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, provides international relief and supports long-term sustainable development. Donations to the International Response Fund may be made by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW and specifying the International Response Fund, or via the National Red Cross secure donation page.

On December 12, 1938, the IRS issued a ruling letter confirming that the Red Cross and its units, like the Northwest North Carolina Chapter, are exempt from the payment of federal income tax and are entitled to receive tax-deductible donations. A: Many organizations including schools, churches, civic groups and businesses support the American Red Cross by holding fundraisers.
